Description

There are two broad aims for this project. First, to explore effective ways of teaching key content to GCSE resit students. Second, to explore effective ways of working with teachers of post-16 resit GCSE. We aim to develop partnerships between schools and colleges offering GCSE resit.

Who is this for?

Teachers of Post-16 GCSE Resit Maths and/or any Head of Department where Post-16 GCSE Resit Maths is taught. Participants may be based in FE colleges, sixth form colleges, schools with post-16 provision or other post-16 settings.

What is involved?

Through a number of face to face Work Group meetings, participating teachers will develop their practice to develop teaching and learning approaches/pedagogy to promote student engagement with the revised GCSE curriculum and develop their own confidence in teaching the new GCSE as a resit in Post-16 which is often limited to an 8-month course. We will focus particularly on the problem solving and proportional reasoning element of the GCSE, which now accounts for a large part of the exam marks.

Intended Outcomes

• Participants will deepen their knowledge and understanding of the curriculum demands of GCSE maths and their awareness of pedagogical approaches that best support students taking GCSE for the second time.
• Participants’ departments will, through shared good practice, will become more effective at teaching GCSE resit, for example by wider and more confident use of teaching approaches such as bar-modelling, multiplicative reasoning or realistic contextualisation.
• Increased localised support and collaboration between FE colleges, sixth form colleges and 11-18 schools.
• Increased pupil engagement with, and conceptual understanding of, maths, and, in turn, improved pupil outcomes at GCSE.

Expectations of participants and their schools

• Attend the three half day face to face Work Group meetings:-
• Partake in further in-school activity, for example, trialling teaching approaches, lesson study or further departmental professional development.
• Contribute to Work Group evaluation processes.
