Teaching Maths with confidence and deep understanding in the Early Years: Pre-school to Reception

Who is this for

For practitioners within school-based pre-schools/ nurseries and Reception classes who are new to EY, or with limited EY maths experience and training, this is a project that explores key concepts in early mathematical development and effective pedagogies that support Early Years mathematics learning. This Work Group will also suit schools who wish to develop a cohesive progression from pre-school to Reception.

What is involved?

This Work Group will involve three afternoon sessions during the spring term.

Participants are also expected to engage in research as part of their independent learning through the duration of the project. Specific gap tasks will be set to allow participants to develop aspects of their learning in their own provision, enable sharing of practice and allow for further developments to be made across the Work Group.

Intended Outcomes

New practitioners and those with limited experience will increase their subject knowledge and develop effective pedagogies around EY maths teaching. Through understanding the principles and pedagogies of EY best practice, practitioners will be able to provide children with access to deep mathematical understanding which will ensure they build solid foundations for future maths learning.

Participants will gain a detailed understanding of how children learn early mathematical concepts, with a focus on the development of counting, cardinality and composition.

Schools with pre-schools may send practitioners from both pre-school and Reception; they will be able to work together to develop a clear progression between the two settings.

Expectations of participants and their schools

As this is CPD in the form of a Work Group, participants will be expected to carry out tasks beyond the face-to-face time. They should also be aware that, as a Work Group, they are developing new knowledge and contributing to a body of knowledge, so should be willing to share their findings more widely.

Participants in this Work Group will be expected to attend 3 afternoons of training:

Session 1: Thursday 27th February (Jeavons Wood Primary School, Cambourne, CB23 6DZ)

Session 2: Monday 9th March (Huntingdon Nursery School, PE29 1AD)

Session 3: Thursday 26th March (Jeavons Wood Primary School, Cambourne, CB23 6DZ)

All sessions will run from 1.30- 4.30pm

Participants will be expected to attend all sessions.
