The ‘SEND’ and ‘Maths in Stories’ Work Groups are funded by the CAM Academy Trust Maths outreach department.

1. Developing mathematics for pupils with SEND

Overview:

This programme involves mainstream and special schools working together to improve SEND provision in mathematics. Participants will improve their understanding of the different areas within SEND and the pedagogy that is associated with working with these students. They will explore ways to encourage reasoning and the use of manipulatives, providing a different approach to working with SEND students across mainstream and special schools. The pedagogy introduced and any resources trialled, will support the principles of teaching for mastery.

Who is this for?

All teachers and higher level teaching assistants who teach or deliver mathematics programmes within primary, secondary and special schools. Ideally participants should have sound subject knowledge and at least two years’ experience in the classroom. This Work Group would also be suitable for a SENCo in mainstream schools with a background in mathematics.

What is involved?

  • Fun and engaging sessions – linked to practical activities that can be used to support pupils with SEND
  • Attending three sessions across the year
  • Independent study and school-based work – linked to gap tasks

Expectations of participants and their schools

Participants should be working with pupils with SEND either in a mainstream school or a special school. They must be able and willing to commit to participate fully in all elements of the programme.

The participant’s school must have the capacity and commitment to support them throughout the programme.
